Knitter Spotlight- Madison Kay Clement

Madison Kay ClementsMadison Kay Clement is an 18-year-old high school student from Dallas, Texas setting great examples in her community on how to get involved in volunteering for special charities. As a junior, Madison established a club within her school teaching students how to knit hats to donate for the Passing the Hat organization. Her unique idea, inspired by her own mother’s fight with breast cancer, flourished within her school and became a recognized organization including 200 of her fellow students.

Madison says she hopes to show people there are many unique ways to get involved in the community.

“I hope that other students are inspired to find other fun and creative ways to help and bring happiness to others,” says Madison. “I hope that other students see the importance of volunteering for charities of personal significance to them. Passing the Hat is important to me, not only because my mom is a breast cancer survivor, cured by Baylor Hospital, but because I can create something tangible that connects me to the recipient of my hat. After seeing the love and support the hat has had on my mom, I can only hope that my hats have that effect on other patients.”

Madison has also spent her time volunteering for the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children during the summer when she was a junior. She had the opportunity to meet families and patients by participating in their Scottish Rite experience.

“Volunteering here was a fun way to help children battling such tough diseases and injuries. It touched my heart to see the strength of the patients, despite their challenges.”

Madison also participates in an all-girls club at her high school called ASTRA, where members complete a service project once a month.

“From making dog toys out of old t-shirts for Operation Kindness to gathering books for underprivileged schools, this club exposed me to a variety of ways of helping out the Dallas community. This club provided consistent and unique opportunities to give back.”

Madison is an excellent example of hard-work and dedication to her community, someone we are proud to highlight on Passinghats.org.
