Passing the Hat is a newer non profit. We knit hats for cancer patients. The we are cancer patients, survivors and supporters. Most of us knit using a loom. Some cancer patients on chemotherapy tend to loose dexterity and memory while on the drugs. We have found the loom the easiest to use.
We do have survivors and supporters using knitting needles and crochet hooks along with knitting machines. I’m excited to say that in 2014 we are averaging 150 hats being made per week.
We currently have 10 knitting groups and a number of individuals making up these numbers. Yes we are looking to grow. We need more knitters and are always on the lookout for yarn. (not wool)
On the website www.passingthehat.net we have more information and photos are coming. Let me know if you would like to join us. I can be reached at: Ellenpassingthehat@gmail.com
I would like to be one of your knitting volunteers. I just saw the Channel 8 story. I have yarn and patterns for hats. Please tell me how to proceed.
Thanks,
Sandy Spett
Hi Sandra,
Thank you so much for wanting to help. Use your favorite pattern and please do not use wool. When you have a number of hats contact me and we will arrange to have them picked up or keep them local in your area. I will also send you our labels so people will know where they are coming from. Thank you again and Happy Holidays.
Hi Ellen, my name is Salena King and I was watching a story on passing the hat on the news. I’ve lost family to Cancer and I want to help. Please let me know how I can.
Thanks
Hi Salena,
Thank you so much for wanting to help. If you already knit or crochet find your favorite pattern and have some fun. If you dont – on the website under knitting there are a few short videos on how to get started with a loom. The loom can be purchased at michaels, joanns, hobby lobby or walmart. Also on the knitting site there are a few guidelines keeping cancer patients in mind. Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy Holidays
Hello Ellen. I just saw the News story on Facebook where my friend Lili Rodriguez is interviewed on her hat that she received from you. I have taught with Lili for over ten years now and have been wanting to make hats for cancer patients since she was first diagnosed but did not know how to go about it. I work full time but would like to be able to crochet hats from home if possible. Please let me know what I need to do, to be able to donate hats.
Thank you,
Odette Donnelly
Hi Odette,
Love to have you crochet hats. Find your favorite pattern and have fun. When you have a bunch email me at ellenpassingthehat@gmail.com. I will arrange for a pick up depending on where you live. If your not local we will find a cancer hospital or clinic near you, send you some labels for the hats and you can drop them off. We just need to keep track of numbers. On the website there are a few suggestions keeping cancer patients in mind at http://www.passinghats.org/knitters. Let me know if you have any questions and thank you for wanting to help us. Happy Holidays!
